Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a system of central government schools for talented children predominantly from rural areas. These schools are run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The main objective of JNVs is to identify talented children from rural areas and provide them with quality modern education free of cost, including boarding, lodging, and other facilities.

History & Vision of Navodaya Vidyalayas

The idea of setting up residential schools to bring out the best of rural talent was conceived by former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. The National Policy on Education (1986) led to the establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across India.

The mission of JNVs is to promote excellence with equity by providing free education from Class 6 to 12 to talented students irrespective of their socio-economic background.
